Agaricus blazei Murrill is a mushroom named by the American naturalist W.A. Murrill. It has been used in Sao Paolo Brazil for generations as a delicious and nutritious food.
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania started studying ABM in 1965 because they were interested in how it seemed to improve the health of the people who ate it. ABM contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids and polysaccharides (several forms of beta-glucan). Polysaccharides have been studied for their health benefits by such organizations as the Armed Forces Radiobiological Institute, Tulane University and the Harvard Medical School.
The Japanese have been researching and using ABM since the early 1970s.There it is also recognized as an adjuvant, meaning that it is used in combination with conventional treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy. In Japan, about 500 million dollars worth of ABM are sold annually.
As a food, ABM is considered a gourmet mushroom, with an almond-like flavor. It is beginning to become popular in the United States. In Japan, it is known and used for its anti-tumor effects, for its anti-viral properties, as a blood sugar moderator, as a cholesterol reducer and an immune system enhancer. Research in the United States, Brazil and Europe has supported this.
